Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The UNHABITAT-Urban Planning and Design Branch internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. 

The intern will work, in coordination with the Urban Planning and Design Branch, under the direct supervision of the Head of UN Habitat Office in Spain located in Madrid. He/she will support the activities included in the project “Towards a New Urban Agenda” in collaboration with other UN-Habitat Units and Branches. The incumbent will support the following activities:

- Support the implementation and follow up on technical activities linked to the project “Towards a New Urban Agenda”.
- Support to the effective communication and advocacy activities related to the New Urban Agenda and HABITAT III preparatory process.

Specific Duties:

- Support the implementation and follow up on technical activities linked to the project “Towards a New Urban Agenda”:

- Supports the organization of Experts Groups Meeting and related seminars.  Supports the elaboration of relevant communication material and background documents.
- Supports local logistics during the seminars.
- Supports the preparation and review of activities reports and documents.
- Assists in project management.

- Support the implementation communication and advocacy activities related to the new urban agenda and Habitat III:

- Supports the preparation of relevant material and background documents.
- Supports the organization of meetings and events within UN-Habitat institutional campaigns (i.e. World Urban Day, etc…). 
- Participates in briefings and reporting.
- Supports the development and follow up on agreements with key institutional partners.

- Other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a.  Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. 

Studies in Masters in Social Science, Urban Development, Engineering, Development Studies, Architecture or equivalent diploma is preferred.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English and Spanish (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
