Responsibilities

As a member of the Global Health, Discovery and Translational Science team, The Senior Program Officer (SPO), Discovery - MNCH & Nutrition, will manage and lead the infant/child cognitive growth and development portfolio for our Healthy Birth, Growth and Development (HGBD) initiative. As a recognized expert in infant/child cognitive and physical growth and development (as a researcher/epidemiologist/clinician), they will develop and lead a portfolio of strategic investments targeting improved cognitive growth and development and mortality reduction. The SPO, Discovery – MNCH & Nutrition will target the creation of new tools to measure and predict cognitive and physical development, catalyze and build effective internal and external partner relationships, and identify novel interventions. Key target geographies include South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop innovative and strategic approaches to prioritizing healthy infant/child growth and cognitive development interventions most likely to achieve mortality reduction, based on epidemiological considerations and evidence-based approaches;
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of investments to support the HBGD initiative with particular emphasis on cognitive research and assessment tools that can determine effectiveness of interventions supported by the foundation's Program Strategy Teams (PST), as well as guide future new interventions;
  • Oversee existing programs and create new programs for our HBGD work-stream; interface internally with PST leadership (i.e. Nutrition, MNCH, EDD, Malaria, Pneumonia and Agriculture); evaluate progress against milestones and goals;
  • Develop and build effective partner relationships and represent the foundation to leaders of governmental funding agencies (WHO, USAID, NIH), other non-profits and for profits including drug and technology companies; this includes both formal and informal presentations such as making speeches, attending conferences and other meetings as necessary;
  • Analyze technical data and information, assessing progress against programmatic and strategic goals, and making high-level technical, strategic and operational decisions. Decisions may relate to prioritization, scope of work, funding, selecting technologies, strategy/direction, and more;
  • Create and support new investigative efforts in these areas through RFPs, outreach to established investigators, and work with our Grand Challenges and Grand Challenges Exploration teams;
  • Leverage the best of the foundation's assets to create innovative approaches to advancing the capacity of other foundation partners to complete their implementation and advocacy work;
  • This role is responsible for high quality interactions and clear and consistent communications with grantees and partners in the field so that packages of interventions can be designed to improve maternal and child outcomes quickly and effectively.

Qualifications

  • MD, DVM, and/or PhD with minimum 15 years of experience working on basic and translational research in related areas of child/infant cognitive and physical growth and development, preferred;
  • Recognized expert in child/infant growth and development through a clinical care and/or epidemiological lens, with emphasis on developing/implementing/analyzing cognitive assessments, their relevant epidemiology or clinical impact (with particular emphasis on developing or implementing cognitive assessment tools in infants/children);
  • Expert knowledge of the clinical and epidemiological aspects of infant/child growth and development, as well as solid experience in design and development of global health strategies and programs that improve infant/child health outcomes in developing countries. This may include: policy development, evaluation of field projects, operations research, data analysis, management of strategies and programs that improve healthy infant/child growth and cognitive development;
  • Hands-on experience in resource-limited settings (particularly in Africa or India), including past experience managing communications and interactions with international funders, health ministries, policy makers, scientists and/or clinicians, preferred;
  • Previous experience designing academic and/or operational field-based research that is scientifically rigorous and catalytic of policy and program change, preferred;
  • Previous experience identifying priority areas for funding in infant/child growth and development and developing and shaping proposals into successful applications;
  • Knowledge of existing global health landscape and a fundamental underlying knowledge of global health program implementation, along with the capacity to identify and activate interconnections within related areas in public health, such as reproductive health, newborn and child health, malaria, and HIV/AIDS;
  • Experience partnering with other investigators, NGOs, governmental agencies on collaborative projects at a leadership level with a demonstrated capacity to define objectives and deliverables that enable effective monitoring and evaluation of results;
  • Proven success working effectively across traditional disciplinary boundaries in a highly collaborative manner;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with senior leadership and senior policy makers;
  • Experience and evidence of innovation in the conception, design, review and management of strategies, initiatives and programs;
  • Position requires the ability to critically identify and evaluate potential partner's ability and capacity, and to decide on and between strategic approaches and tactics by which to achieve desired goals and impact;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a broad and diverse audience;
  • Ability to travel up to 30% time.
